Five Element Acupuncture

The principles of Five Element Acupuncture are based on the five elements of nature: fire, earth, metal, water and wood, it has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a method of diagnosis and treatment for over two thousand years.

What is Five Element Acupuncture?

Sometimes referred to as the “Five Phase” theory, it is believed the five elements represent our controlling and creative energies. Ideally, all fi ve of these elements should be in balance.

Traditional acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques focusing on the individual, not their illness. All symptoms are seen as relative to one another and treated as such. Every patient is regarded as a unique individual, and even if two patients have received the same western medical diagnosis they would receive different acupuncture treatments.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Acupuncture is based on the principal that the insertion of very fine needles into specific acupuncture points can restore the overall balance of the five element energies in your body. This gives Acupuncture the scope to help many conditions ranging from pain relief to women’s health issues, and includes psychological factors such as anxiety, stress or depression.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The first appointment will last about one and a half hours. You will be asked about your current symptoms, your medical history and what treatment you have received in the past. You will also discuss diet, digestion, sleeping patterns and emotional state.

Pulse points will be noted on both wrists and your tongue may be inspected. Suitable Acupuncture points will be selected, and then, only when you are completely comfortable with the process will the very fine needles be inserted.

Frequency and length of treatments depend on the individual, but generally patients feel a benefit from 3-5 treatments.

DO THE NEEDLES HURT?

Acupuncture needles are much finer than those used for blood tests and injections. The sensation experienced when a needle is inserted is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Often patients report feeling very relaxed during a treatment.
